Carbon Footprint

Consistent with Malaysia government agenda, UUM is committed towards supporting and contributing to environmental sustainability agenda of the Paris Agreement and United Nation SDG 2030 for the benefit of future generations by moving forward towards realizing its Living Campus agenda towards realizing comprehensive campus sustainability.

Through Living Campus initiatives, UUM has participated in the UI GreenMetric (IUGM) Rankings since 2015, involved in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking on Sustainability since 2021, improve university's solid waste management system, initiate rare parks, develop staffs as SDG Champion and perform various sustainability programs to multiply efforts towards a sustainable campus. In addition, UUM’s action of not exploring its reserve forests in making them as commercial areas such as farming or industrial is solid evidence proves that UUM’s commitment in resonating the hope of the government and world community on the importance of every party to play their role to sustain the green environment.

Despite the efforts and programs implemented, it is necessary for continuous monitoring to be carried out so that each UUM sustainability program really contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. Carbon footprint estimates the amount of greenhouse gases released during the operation of the university, aiming to identify the main source of emissions so that actions to improve the operation of the university can be identified, improved and developed so that it can be used as an example for the surrounding community.

In the context of energy consumption, which is one of the main contributors of carbon emission in the campus, UUM has committed to continuously improving it practices in reducing GHGs emissions. At current, UUM has yet to have systematic, integrated, ingenious and comprehensive energy sustainability model in place. However, the Development and Maintenance Department (JPP UUM) employs sustainable design within the development of UUM campus, in particular on new building development and in achieving 5-star rating of National Building Energy Intensity (BEI) Labelling for Government Buildings.

BEI is aiming to ascertains energy performance of Government buildings, accelerates efforts to make Government buildings energy efficient through Government Lead by Example, provides and disseminates information to building occupants on energy usage performance of the building compared to energy efficient building, and helps the Government to achieve national commitment to reduce GHG emissions intensity of GDP by 45% by 2030.
